Le Quy An, an overseas Vietnamese living in the US, decided to study for a PhD in business administration at the age of 72 to gain knowledge and return to his homeland to support its modernization process.
After six years of study, he earned his doctorate from the International American University.
“In order to contribute to the fatherland, I had to increase my knowledge, even though the work was difficult for me because of some health problems,” he said.
An believed that pursuing a PhD would help him to keep pace with the times and allow him to play a part in his homeland's development.
Le Quy An has lived overseas for many years and he made a great effort to teach himself a number of subjects including the English, French, German, Chinese and Dutch languages.
The elderly man intends to open a school in Vietnam to help local students access the world’s advanced medical knowledge.
In addition to being a teacher and a businessman, An is interested in the nation’s culture. He has composed many passionate songs about the traditional culture and events such as the Hung Kings death anniversary and the Hung Kings temple festival.
An also founded the Overseas Hung Kings Temple Association and headed its arts section. He recently released a DVD on Vietnamese music together with some other artists.
